Authorized Users

Religionsource is primarily intended for journalists. By request, journalism professors and journalism students can also be authorized. Scholars whose contact information is included in the Religionsource database are automatically sent authorization.

Journalists Employed at News Outlets

If you are a journalist employed at a bona fide news outlet, you can use the database by signing in with your name, news outlet, your email address at the news outlet, and primary beat. Subsequent sign-ins require only the email address.

Freelance Journalists

Email us with the following. We can usually email authorization within one business day.

  • your name and phone number
  • the name of the news outlet you are on assignment for, or names of the outlets with which you will try to place your story
  • citations for at least two other articles you've had published

Journalism Professors

If you are a journalism professor teaching a course that includes writing on religion topics and you would like to authorize your class to use this database, email us with the following, and we'll email authorizations to your students within a week. We require this process in order to deter general students or members of the public from bothering scholars with queries that are more appropriately answered by visiting a library. (If you yourself want to use the database, simply send us an email including your faculty position and the name of your institution.)

  • your name, position, email address, and phone number
  • the name of the course and of your institution
  • a list of the names and email addresses for the students in your class

Journalism Students

If you are a college student pursuing a journalism degree or writing for your school's news outlet and want to use this database for those purposes, send your journalism professor or outlet's faculty adviser an email including your email address, phone number, and school, and the name of the course or news outlet, asking the professor to add his or her name and faculty position and to forward the email to source@religionsource.org. Once we receive the email, we can normally send you authorization within two business days. Student authorizations are valid for six months, renewable using the same procedure.

Scholars Listed in the Database

We automatically send authorization to scholars whose contact information is listed in the database. Given the need to conserve network-server resources so that journalists can get quick responses to searches, other scholars are normally not authorized to use the database. Designed to work well for journalists—whose ways of searching differ substantially from that of scholars—this database may not serve scholars' needs as well as library databases, which are designed with scholars in mind. Click Who's Included in the database to learn about the criteria for being listed. If you have questions about being listed, please contact us.
